About Us

Healthcare professionals who choose careers in public mental health are a special group. At the Altshuler Center for Education & Research (ACER) at Metrocare, we believe they deserve a special level of commitment and resources.

ACER is an initiative of Metrocare Services in Dallas, Texas, one of the largest providers of public mental health treatment in Texas.

Addressing an Important Need

Across America, an urgent need exists for mental health professionals who are well-trained in best practices and willing to provide evidence-based care within their communities through public mental health centers. The Center for Education & Research at Metrocare is committed to addressing this need for our community.

Training Programs

In order to meet the demand for public mental health services tomorrow, the Center offers top-tier training for physicians, advanced practice nurses (APNs), counselors and other healthcare workers today. The Center is committed to offering a stimulating and satisfying training experience within real-world community health settings. With access to the clinical resources of Metrocare Services and the 50,000 people it serves each year, the Center provides diverse and specialized training experiences for all of its trainees. In addition to a strong array of clinical service experiences, the Center also offers access to some of the nation’s most experienced public sector physicians, APNs, counselors, clinicians and other healthcare professionals. Our clinical mentors have dedicated time in their schedules to support and supervise trainees to help them develop into national leaders in community mental health care.

Research Training

Trainees who wish to be involved in community-based clinical research have the opportunity to collaborate with current studies or to develop new ones with the assistance of Center staff. Grant development staff is also available to pursue funding. Learn more about our research training.
